A little community diggin’

I (Julie) am a lucky girl.  I had the fun and privilege of working at Blue Mountain Elementary last year.  This lovely school has 16 (count that!) deep beds, with tons of potential for future gardens.  This morning we decided to harvest what we could for donation to the community, as well as weed and tend the beds a little.  Most teachers were away enjoying their summer, so only the truly dedicated showed up (thanks Shawn!).  Maple Ridge has a wonderful school district, and I hope that the idea of school/community gardens will be supported through more funding, enthusiasm and resources.

Several beds are set aside for community groups or people that are interested in getting involved with a school/community garden.  If that is you, you can contact the school office in the fall.

Thanks Darren! We did spend time in the garden during school hours. There are lots of learning outcomes that can be met by being in the garden. Often community members are welcome to help out–just talk to the administrator at the school and find out what they are open to. Teachers generally love to have extra hands and additional expertise:)
